The Swimathon is a fun event organised by the Rotary Club of Lymm, which will raise money for local charities and groups for children and young people. There is also the opportunity to donate up to 50% of the money raised by the team taking part to a charity or group of their choice.
So how does it work? The Rotary Club is looking for teams of up to 6 swimmers. Each team is given a lane of the pool and will swim for 55 minutes. BUT ONLY ONE TEAM MEMBER SWIMS AT A TIME. On average this means that each swimmer does about 10-20 lengths during the 55 minutes, but there is no need for each team member to swim the same number of lengths. Every team member gets sponsorship for the whole team.
Who benefits? Local charities get money to help with their important work and the swimmers have lots of fun trying to swim as many lengths and raise as much sponsorship as they can.
How do you take part? Firstly, get together with up to 5 friends and form a team. Complete the application form and then send it to Martin Dunkley at 9 Rushes Meadow, Lymm, Cheshire, WA13 9RJ. If you want to swim at a particular time, please indicate this on the entry form. Then make sure that all your friends, family and colleagues sponsor you using the sponsorship form. They can sponsor you per length completed by the team or simply specify a fixed donation.
Who takes part? Everyone - if you can swim well enough to be safe in a deep 25 meter pool, and you are at least 8 years of age, you can take part, PROVIDED THAT YOU ARE HEALTHY AND FIT TO SWIM. Don’t forget, it’s the TEAM that is sponsored not the individual so have fun and raise money for charity.
Charities- the Rotary Club intend that all the money raised by team sponsorship will go to local charities and to meet other local charitable needs, plus of course your nominations.
Remember that parent or guardian’s consent must be given for all entrants under 16 years of age.
Would you like to make a Donation? If you are unable to join in the event, but would like to make a donation, please make cheques payable to “The Rotary Club of Lymm Charity Account” and send to: Rotarian Martin Dunkley, address as above. We will ask you separately whether you are prepared to sign a Gift Aid declaration.
Gift Aid It ! As a registered Charity, the Rotary Club of Lymm can reclaim income or capital gains tax (including a top-up) already paid, which is worth 30% on an individual's donations or sponsorship money. If the sponsor is a UK taxpayer, all they have to do is ensure that they complete the sponsorship form, giving their full name (family name and at least their first initial), home house number (or name) and post code (not business address), and tick the column headed “Gift Aid?” and the Rotary Club will do the rest.
